SANQUHAR BRICKWORKS

Buccleugh Terra Cotta Works. NS 780 104.

Operated between c1867 and 1958.

 

The works were operated by James Irving McConnell & Kirkconnel Coal Company from 190. From 1925 it was part of William Baird & Co Ltd and from 1931 to 1947 by Bairds & Dalmellington Ltd and finally by NCB upto closure.

 The variety of stamp marks in the frogs of bricks from this works is numerous.

Works originally opened by  George Cleunel in 1852, J Brodie purchased the works in 1891.  

 In 1891 the works had five Newcastle kilns and a staffordshire oven.

Works later run by Isherwood Brothers and a Mr Scott before been taken over by the Sanquhar * Kirkconnel Colliereis Company.

Advert carlisle Journal  21st May 1859. setting up agents to sell their products in the Carlisle area. The railway line through Sanquhar eventually connecting to carlisle had opened in 1850.

site consisted of 4 Hoffmann kilns 10, 10, 16, 28 chambers. Two of the smaller kilns were built in 1897 and the other in 1898. The larger kiln was built in 1964. Two of the smaller were demolished 1984 and the other was demolished shortly afterwards. 1 modern shuttle kiln 1988.

Not only did some manufacturers make the salt glazed drainage products they also had foundries which allowed them to produce the associated iron work.

In 1880 the Royal Agricultural Society held its annual show in Carlisle. J & R Howie had a stand in the implement section and below is the catalogue entry. Some of the products listed may be in the section below.

A trough designed to attach to a waterpipe with a ball cock. As well as the normal Hurlford by Kilmarnock stamp (appears twice on opposite corners) there is also a '9' stamped into the top.

NETTLE was a trade mark for STEIN Brickworks. It was used for bricks with the following caracteristics. Nettle is one of the high alumina firebrick (42.6%) series possessing properties of high refractoriness,  good resistance to slag penetration and high hardness at high temperatures. (From STEIN Catalogue) They were made at Manuel Works, Linlithgow from 1930 till 2004.
