The area of moor from Hynam Bridge around the water shed of the Gelt including both New and Old waters. Most of this area was originally part of the forest of Geltsdale and was extra parochial. It was controlled by the Earls of Carlisle from Naworth Castle. It was eventually made into a sheem farm which has been called the largest in the country. It is now controlled by the RSPB as one of their bird reserves. Although the area now looks very rural it has been a hive of industry. More details in my article published in Cumbrian Industrialist.
